Abstract
"Two churches for Negroes were built or completed during this period: a brick Methodist church was completed on Church Street, and a new Cumberland Church was dedicated. The city's first smallpox scare also occurred during the early 1900s. City officials were so frightened that they passed a local ordinance requiring everyone to be vaccinated. A hospital called the Pest House was established specifically to serve small pox patients. When Oakwood was established in 1896, Ellen White recommended that students should be taught nursing there. Thus a building called the Sanitarium was constructed to facilitate the instruction of students in the care of the sick."
