Abstract

"I N THE seventeenth century, when the Baptists emerged, the main ecclesiastical systems represented in Britain were Episcopalianism, organised on a parish and diocesan basis, Presbyterianism with its presbyteries, synods and its General Assembly, and Separatism, emphasising the independence of the local Christian community, gathered out of the population as a whole. Baptists would, of course, be classed as Separatists, though the General Baptists show signs of a greater degree of central organisation than the Particular Baptists."
