Abstract
"r-rIJE appearance of The Baptist Hymn Book has once again .1 brought into focus the subject of hymns, their use and their origin. As far as Baptists are concerned, historical research has done nothing to detract from regarding Benjamin Keach as the fountainhead of congregational hymn singing. Nonetheless, every fountain draws its supply from elsewhere and, before Keach, there were hymn-writers and hymn users and others who, though not actively engaged in hymn-writing themselves, encouraged others and brought their labours to light. One such encourager was Hanserd Knollys and recognition of his work is a fitting prelude to the main theme of this article. "
