" Publicado originalmente pela Oxford University Press em 1996, Time as a Metaphor of History é uma obra da historiadora indiana Romila Thapar dedicada a reflexões sobre filosofia da história, principalmente no caso indiano. Ao longo de oito partes, a autora pretende salientar a necessidade de pesquisar as noções de tempo em textos indianos antigos a partir da afirmação de que mito e história não são diferenciados no pensamento da Índia antiga, tese sustentada segundo a dicotomia entre as concepções cíclica e linear de tempo. Thapar procura investigar como as noções de tempo enquanto traços culturais envolvem a visualização em si da forma de tempo, a que ponto o tempo mítico se distingue do tempo histórico, a associação do tempo com escatologias, utopias e configurações morais e sociais conjugadas com o dharma e a contagem do tempo, bem como a maneira pela qual as categorias de tempo são condicionadas pelo ritmo da vida social, e,também,se culturas com concepções diferentes de tempo conseguem se comunicar. A historiadora ainda procura demonstrar a possibilidade ignorada em discussões sobre tempo e história na Índia da justaposição das concepções cíclica e linear em algumas culturas, particularmente na indiana através dos Purāṇas" ["Originally published by Oxford University Press in 1996, Time to the Metaphor of History is a work of Indian historian Romila Thapar dedicated to reflections on the philosophy of history, especially in the Indian case. Over an eight parts, the author wishes to emphasize the need to research the notions of time in ancient Indian texts from the assertion that myth and history are not differentiated in the thinking of ancient India, sustained argument that the dichotomy between the cyclical and linear conceptions of time. Thapar seeks to investigate the notions of time while viewing cultural features involve itself in the form of time, that point the mythical time is distinguished from historical time, the association of time with eschatologies, utopias and moral and social settings combined with the dharma and timing as well as the manner in which the categories are time conditioned by the pace of social life, and also to cultures with ideas Different time can communicate.
