Abstract
"My interest in this subject (professional rather than personal) began as a Bristol College student, when with Peter King, now of Eynsham, I was asked to produce a report for a group of local churches. In this article I wish to attempt a broad survey of the issues (perhaps too broad), concluding by pointing out possible pitfalls for the theologian. lt is a subject fraught with difficulties, one of which is defining the area to be covered. Is 'the occult' witchcraft, New Age movements, spiritualism, ouija, paranormal phenomena, or demon possession? All ofthese? Should we consider its scientific, pastoral or theological implications? The tabloid sensationalism of much Christian writing about the occult has also created enormous barriers to understanding, alienating the sceptic and terrifying the credulous. Is it possible to step back and allow reason a voice?"
