In many countries the establishment of criteria for evaluating scientific research has been considered as a pressing need when planning the allocation of resources, and to justify the investment policies with an objective base. In Venezuela this work is just beginning. For this reason the objective of this research is to explore some of the most important reasons that justify the need for scientific evaluation in the country from the bibliometric perspective and thereby encourage the implementation of such studies. The methodology used was documentary-style, based on the review of scientific articles, reports on the Web, research studies, legal and management documents and other materials addressing the state of science in Venezuela. Accordingly the list of consulted sources is extensive. The results show reasons as the political situation assessment recognizing the relevance of science as an unfinished task, its declaration as a priority area of development, the need for comprehensive studies of indicators, the momentum of regional projects, among others. In conclusion it may be said that now is the best time to undertake evaluation studies in Venezuela because of the increased demand for scientific work in the country and in Latin America.Date
