A A fine stitch: Archives, information, mediationThe reflections presented here are framed within the challenges related to access to archives, based on the premise that access not only involves making the archives available and searchable through technological resources, but also understanding their origin and production context. In this sense, access becomes a process of mediation, which implies a complex negotiation between the expectations of users and the specialized knowledge that archival science can provide. Given that users have very diverse profiles in terms of experience, education, and information needs, archival mediation can only be carried out if the profile of the institutions that safeguard the documentary heritage, the nature of their holdings, and above all, the specificity of archival documents are understood.

NeoCartography and geoliteracy: How the representation of cartographic materials in information systems intervenes in the search practices of geography communityThis research will analyze the adequacy of the representations of cartographic resources included in information retrieval systems to the search and access needs of the community specialized in Geography. Among the proposed objectives are to survey such systems at the public, governmental and national levels; to identify the metadata standards or schemes used and to study the ways of searching, accessing and using these resources. The work methodology to be implemented will be based on a descriptive-exploratory quantitative-qualitative approach to be developed in three phases or work stages. The first phase will be devoted to the analysis of the representations based on the identification of the systems and the subsequent application of evaluation criteria and instruments to carry out the observation. The second phase will include a survey of the selected population to learn how users access the information contained in the cartographic resources, which will be complemented with semi-structured interviews based on a purposive sample of key subjects. In a third stage, the results of phase one and two will be analyzed comparatively in order to identify the relationships between the representations, the existing systems and the expectations and search needs of the users.

The scientific production of Uruguay from the Web Of Science (WOS): 40 years of science with international visibilityThe scientific production of Uruguay is analyzed diachronically in the period 1980-2019 in order to characterize it in the context of the most productive countries in the region. This is a descriptive and analytical study, where the Red de Indicadores de Ciencia y Tecnología -Iberoamericana e Interamericana- (RICYT), the OECD and the WOS are used as data sources. The results are presented in three blocks. Firstly, Uruguay is located in the regional context through seven macro indicators; In this regard, it can be concluded that, in general, the country performs well in those indicators that are not dependent on relative size. Secondly, 19,679 publications were identified for the 40-year period considered; 60% of the production is concentrated in the last decade, and in the penultimate decade the most cited production. At a global level, Uruguay collaborates more frequently with the region and with Europe, rather than with the US, contrary to what is reported in the literature on Latin American countries. Finally, the thematic specialty of the country’s scientific production was identified: biological sciences and agricultural sciences, which positions Uruguay between the western and bio-environmental models.

The Indigenous Pictorial Codices held in the National Library of MexicoThis work studies five manuscripts from the colonial period that are preserved in the National Library of Mexico. Firstly, it explores the concept of codex and its application in the Mesoamerican context, with the interest of locating the proposed documentary grouping criteria based on the remanence of indigenous record systems. Then comes the presentation of each of the copies that constitute the corpus, which includes a brief historical context as well as a select example of some of its graphic characteristics. Finally, the spatio-temporal location of the copies in the history of Mexican written culture is shown, and it concludes with some thoughts on the corpus addressed and the indigenous scriptural and iconographic manifestations in the colonial period. In this way, the purpose of the article is focused on presenting and describing five manuscripts as members of the corpus of Nahua codices held in the National Library of Mexico.

Reading habits of students from Ecuadorian universitiesThis work examines the reading habit of 7.094 Ecuadorian university students through an online survey. They are analyzed according to gender, the three geographic areas of Ecuador, the undergraduate/postgraduate distinction, and the areas of knowledge. Differences are compared in hours spent per week, number of books read, frequency of library attendance, types of reading done there, number of books purchased/downloaded, and percentage spent reading in free time compared to other activities in the mentioned categories. The students of Arts and Humanities and those of Health Sciences are the ones with the best reading habit. However, the reading habit of the sample as a whole is low, which is why the preparation of professors is necessary to face this problem.

Exploring the “school archive” conceptHistorically, the terms “school archive” refer to archives that are derived from an educational entity at middle or high school. However, the scientific literature gives us other examples, in which “school archives” are presented as a broad concept, which can also identify, in certain cases, archives from universities. In this sense, the term is limited for some uses, since educational laws often present levels of education that differ or extend the three mentioned, in different jurisdictions. This article, therefore, seeks to characterize and analyze the concept of “school archive”, considering its multiple epistemological perspectives. Methodologically, it uses Rodgers’ (2000) strategy of concept analysis, which allows the identification of common attributes, history, and consequences of the use of this concept. It has been considered, from the analysis carried out, that the term adheres to certain educational contexts, but from a more limited spectrum, it fails to represent the specificities required for each educational level.

The role of libraries in the socio-educational reintegration of adolescents deprived from freedom: Analysis of five libraries of Latin American juvenile detention centersThis research analyzes the role of libraries in the socio-educational reintegration of adolescents deprived from freedom in four Latin American countries: Chile, Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico. The qualitative methodological approach is used, and semi-structured interviews are applied to the representatives of the selected institutions. Through a content analysis, the role and position of libraries in organizations that work with adolescents deprived from freedom are studied. In addition, the importance of interdisciplinary work is studied and specific roles and functions of libraries for the insertion and social empowerment of young people are disclosed. The promotion of basic social rights is evident in the proposal of activities and services and a difference in the experience that supports each information unit.

Construction of global citizenship through rural libraries. A systematization of two experiences in ColombiaAlthough the relationship between libraries and citizenship has been widely studied, there is a gap in the production of knowledge around the link between libraries and global citizenship. The present work contributes to bridge that gap by presenting the results of an investigation that sought to understand how two rural libraries in Colombia, through their reading, writing and orality practices, contribute to the construction of global citizenship. The study was based on a research approach that favors dialogue and the collective construction of knowledge. The results allowed to identify that both libraries build global citizenship by promoting its three fundamental pillars: respect for diversity, solidarity, and a shared sense of humanity.

Written Culture in an Art Museum. Objects and practices of the written word in Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes Rosa Galisteo de Rodríguez in the mid-twentieth centuryThis article examines the social uses of writing in a provincial museum of fine arts on the Argentinean area known as Litoral in the mid-twentieth century, based on different contributions from historical studies on written culture. The interrelated study of bibliographic objects, ephemera, exhibited writings, apparatus and autographs allows us to identify and constitute different writing practices and artefacts as an object of analysis. From the study of a particular case, the article characterizes different typologies of writing and analyses their appropriation by a social group. These uses are contextualized in the light of the emergence of differential forms of valuing writing in the graphic media and in the institutional culture of the museum in the mid-twentieth century. The particularities of an art museum allow us to observe from a singular perspective the insistence of imaginaries that link written inscription with the expression of individuality and the preservation of illustrious names in the collective memory. The study also highlights the notion of written heritage, understood as a conceptual device that makes it possible to give a unitary and integral account of the written objects preserved in a museum.

Assembling the province. The cartographic works of the Dirección General de Tierras y Geodesia of Buenos Aires province (1913-1981)The Dirección General de Tierras y Geodesia of Buenos Aires province is usually thought of as heir of the responsibilities of the Departamento Topográfico created in 1826. It is true that it absorbed part of de duties of the old Departmento, especially in cadastral matters, throughout the 20th century since it was created in 1913 the office was adapting itself to the cartography policy established by the Instituto Geográfico Nacional, and others institutions in the field at international level, such as the Instituto Panamericano de Geografía e Historia. This adaptation implied the use of projections and the homogenization of grids or index maps, which were guiding the mapping in the Buenos Aires territory. Here, we intend to reconstruct the cartographic project of the Dirección General de Tierras y Geodesia, through the reconstruction of its grid, survey’s scales and prioritized areas to study. Likewise, we analyzed the links that the Office established with another institutions. We argue that these networks were essential for the construction of its position in the scientific field, which was necessary to make it the official control body for provincial cartography in 1981.

Characterization of the performance levels of informational competence: The case of Universidad José Vasconcelos, MéxicoIn the face of increasingly relative and interdisciplinary knowledge, the development of informational competence has positioned itself as a critical issue in university education. In this context, the objective of the research was to recover the experiences of university professors who teach subjects related to information literacy, to characterize the levels of performance that they evaluate in informational competence and the learning situations that they implement for this purpose. In the study, the conceptual framework of the evaluation of competencies was assumed and a qualitative methodology was deployed through semi-structured interviews applied to seven professors from the Universidad José Vasconcelos, Oaxaca, Mexico. The results indicate that the learning of this competence is conceived as a gradual and dynamic process that can be characterized parting from three levels of performance: low, medium, and high. It is concluded that conditional knowledge is the key indicator to verify the transition through these levels, that is, the way in which students integrate knowledge and skills from strategic and ethical decision-making for the search and use of information, and how this is expressed in the elaboration of argumentative writings.

Readers in the city of Córdoba, Argentina: An approach to reading practices before and during the pandemicThis paper analyzes reading as a cultural practice of the population of the city of Córdoba (Argentina). It is based on the final survey “Cultural activities in Córdoba. The impact of the pandemic” carried out in May 2021 by the research team: “Tramas de la cultura III”. The semi-structured questionnaire consists of three blocks: one concerning the usual cultural activities carried out pre-pandemic, another referring to the period of strict isolation, and a third when certain restrictions were partially lifted. A proportional statistical sampling was used. A total of 400 households were visited and one person over 18 years of age responded in each home. Reading is understood in a broad manner, including literature in general, magazines, and press, without distinction of the support or device in which the practice is carried out. The results obtained show the characterization of readers in the city of Cordoba in terms of gender, age, socioeconomic and educational level, reading preferences, relationship with other cultural activities, and the impact of the pandemic on the practice.

Reference service facing COVID-19 pandemic: A case studyThe COVID-19 pandemic impacted the daily work of all citizens, especially in our libraries, since, after the Social, Preventive, and Mandatory Isolation (ASPO), in a short time, they were forced to adapt their activities so that they could be carried out remotely. In the case described, although a great impact on the operation of the library was expected, according to the statistics after one year, it was noted that, although the transactions had decreased, the usual activities had developed normally and its quality had not diminished thanks to the technological advantage of the institution in general and of the library's reference service in particular.
