  • Science and Technology Studies in Colombia: Research Groups and Collaboration

  • A case study reflecting the situation of advertising documentation in Spanish companies

Cruz Gil, María del Carmen (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-12-07)
The boundaries between the phenomenon and the context may not be obvious. For this reason, a study of the scientific literature on advertising documentation is carried out, which is considered important to be a deep one, so it is contrasted with a real context to know the situation of the advertising documentation of a Spanish company, Balay, selected for being more than seventy years old and still in force today. It also has a large amount of advertising documentation that reflects the progress of the company and is a reflection of the social, cultural and economic context, in addition to being part of the documentary heritage as has been claimed through other studies. Therefore, once the knowledge of the studies in advertising documentation has been acquired, it is combined from the perspective of information and documentation management to contrast this theory in a real context and to understand the situation, in order to also be able to answer several questions, such as how to know if companies have specialized professional teams, documentalists, in order to apply techniques that make it possible to recover advertising documentation. The study ends with the conclusions and recommendations section.
  • Curricular overview of the teaching of legal norms that affect library activity

Torija Zane, Lucía (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-12-07)
This non-experimental, structured, cross-sectional research seeks to provide an overview of the teaching of laws and regulations that affect the library profession, taking as an example the library science career at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. The research approach is mixed: quantitative (graduate surveys) and qualitative (interviews with different professionals) methods were combined. It contains a brief review of the laws involved and provides advice for their inclusion in the degree study plans. Most graduate librarians do not have sufficient knowledge of the laws related to their profession. How can a librarian promote free access to information and defend exceptions for libraries without solid rationale for the topic and tools to achieve it?
  • Strategic management of external organizational communication in the era of social media. Challenges of the BUCOC network member libraries

Rodríguez, Mariela (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-12-06)
This work analyzes the management of external digital organizational communication in the social media of university libraries belonging to the Network of Catholic and Catholic-oriented Universities of the Argentine Republic (BUCOC), and its possible relationship with the professional training of those responsible and collaborators in charge of this task. The study was carried out between July 1, 2020 and January 31, 2022, using a descriptive approach and a non-experimental design of transectional or cross-sectional type. Direct observation techniques were used for the analysis, using criteria guides to analyze websites and social media profiles, and surveys of library managers and their collaborators involved in communication management. The results reveal that most libraries use social media to promote their services, but hardly use them to establish public relations with users. Weaknesses in communication practices were identified, possibly related to the lack of training in the strategic management of digital communication. The work concludes by pointing out possible areas for future research related to the topic addressed in the study.
  • Application of neuroeducation and Design Thinking as a didactic strategy in the university classroom. Experience in the Quantitative Methods I course of the Library and Information Sciences course at the University of Costa Rica

Mora-Coto, Grettel María; Rodríguez-Valerio, Daniela (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-12-05)
The present study arises from the need to innovate in university education through the interdisciplinary work of two professors: one of mathematics and the other of library science with the implementation of a didactic strategy in the course Quantitative Methods I of the Library and Information Sciences career (EBCI) of the University of Costa Rica. The research describes a practical case of pedagogical mediation, from its planning, execution and evaluation, integrating the theory of Design Thinking (DT) and theoretical contributions of Neuroeducation to achieve learning of basic concepts. of functions in a mathematics class. Among the results it is found that for 86% of the students the strategy used in the lesson motivated during the class, being valued in general with 9.59 points based on 10. In conclusion, this study has allowed the reflection of the didactic strategies that can be developed in a class with the support of Neuroeducation and how it can be nourished from other dimensions such as the DT methodology, without losing sight of what is essential in the educational field: meaningful learning
  • The role of bibliographic, institutional and person identifiers in bibliographic control

Martín, Sandra Gisela (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-12-03)
The aim of this work is to know the degree of insertion of bibliographic, institutional, and person identifiers in the bibliographic control process in national libraries and/or national bibliographic agencies of the Latin American countries that are members of the Association of Ibero-American States for Development of the National Libraries of Ibero-America (ABINIA), -Spain and Portugal are excluded-. The study was based on website research with a qualitative strategy around the analysis of identifiers. We proceeded to consult, observe, read, analyze and interpret the web pages of national libraries, national bibliographic agencies and the official websites of each of the identifiers. The results and conclusions show that Latin American national libraries rely solely and exclusively on two bibliographic identifiers for the registration of legal deposit and the preparation of national bibliographies: the ISBN (books) and the ISSN (periodical publications) and, to a lesser extent, in the ISMN (music publications, sheet music, etc.). The inexistence of networks of bibliographic agencies and agencies that manage identifiers that work collaboratively with national libraries show the limitations that exist in the dissemination of documentary heritage and, therefore, the limitations to be able to carry out exhaustive universal bibliographic control.

  • The capricious 1500, a discussion on the definition of incunabula

López Arévalo, Robinson (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-12-07)
This article questions the typical meaning of the term incunabula. Firstly, because the date that defines it does not have a solid foundation. Secondly, because defining it from temporality excludes a series of elements that are key to the birth and establishment of the book. The American historian Robert Darnton, in his famous article, extended the history of the book beyond the object, extending it to communication circuits and the different agents related to its production and uses, namely: authors, publishers, printers, suppliers, sellers, readers, and bookbinders (1982). This bibliographic review recovers other aspects that also define the incunabulum but that have been neglected and attempts to address the birth of the book from the circuits of communication and not only from temporality. Likewise, it brings together facts, discussions and definitions that are little known in the Spanish language, and that will allow specialists and communicators to have greater clarity about the books of the 15th century.
  • Information Literacy on Cuban pedagogical careers

Hernández-Campillo, Thais Raquel; Veranes Gálvez, Lisandra; Arias Hidalgo, Ania Beatriz (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-12-03)
The study discusses the relevance of information literacy in higher education, based on Area 1 of the European Framework of Digital Competences for Citizenship. In this sense, an information literacy program is proposed for the acquisition of informational competencies of students of pedagogical careers at the University of Camagüey. The research assumes the mixed research approach and non-participant observation as the empirical method. Concerning the research techniques, there is a survey for students and an interview with academic directors to investigate the current state of information literacy in the students, from the determination of their information competencies to the analysis of the contents of the subjects and the learning activities. The results of the diagnosis show insufficiencies in the search, evaluation, and management of digital information. Thus, the program developed contains a set of actions focused on the treatment of digital information for teaching activities to improve the information literacy of the subjects investigated. It is concluded that information literacy should have an important place in the academic performance of students and be subject to continuous evaluation.
  • Creation of an aerial scanner for the digitization of heritage bibliographic material

Guadamuz-Villalobos, Jairo (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-11-29)
The conservation of heritage bibliographic material involves, in many cases, the change of support to maintain the consultation of the information without compromising the physical integrity of the documents. The digitization of this material emerges as a solution, but it requires a high investment to acquire specialized equipment that allows the process to be carried out without damaging the documents. This article shows the design of an aerial scanner prototype for the digitization of heritage bibliographic material with an adaptation of the Design Thinking methodology. The prototype was built and validated with different heritage documents from the Room of Ancient Books and Special Collections of the Joaquín García Monge Library of the National University (Costa Rica). As a result, the plans were released so that any information unit can replicate the construction of the prototype and have its own aerial scanner at a more affordable price.
  • A A fine stitch: Archives, information, mediation

Guelfi Campos, José Francisco (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-06-06)
The reflections presented here are framed within the challenges related to access to archives, based on the premise that access not only involves making the archives available and searchable through technological resources, but also understanding their origin and production context. In this sense, access becomes a process of mediation, which implies a complex negotiation between the expectations of users and the specialized knowledge that archival science can provide. Given that users have very diverse profiles in terms of experience, education, and information needs, archival mediation can only be carried out if the profile of the institutions that safeguard the documentary heritage, the nature of their holdings, and above all, the specificity of archival documents are understood.
  • NeoCartography and geoliteracy: How the representation of cartographic materials in information systems intervenes in the search practices of geography community

Blanco, Nancy; Indart, Camila; Bentivegna, Nancy; Bedini, Eugenia (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-06-06)
This research will analyze the adequacy of the representations of cartographic resources included in information retrieval systems to the search and access needs of the community specialized in Geography. Among the proposed objectives are to survey such systems at the public, governmental and national levels; to identify the metadata standards or schemes used and to study the ways of searching, accessing and using these resources. The work methodology to be implemented will be based on a descriptive-exploratory quantitative-qualitative approach to be developed in three phases or work stages. The first phase will be devoted to the analysis of the representations based on the identification of the systems and the subsequent application of evaluation criteria and instruments to carry out the observation. The second phase will include a survey of the selected population to learn how users access the information contained in the cartographic resources, which will be complemented with semi-structured interviews based on a purposive sample of key subjects. In a third stage, the results of phase one and two will be analyzed comparatively in order to identify the relationships between the representations, the existing systems and the expectations and search needs of the users.
  • The scientific production of Uruguay from the Web Of Science (WOS): 40 years of science with international visibility

Fontans-Álvarez, Exequiel; Aguire-Ligüera, Natalia; Feo Cediel, Yennyfer (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-06-06)
The scientific production of Uruguay is analyzed diachronically in the period 1980-2019 in order to characterize it in the context of the most productive countries in the region. This is a descriptive and analytical study, where the Red de Indicadores de Ciencia y Tecnología -Iberoamericana e Interamericana- (RICYT), the OECD and the WOS are used as data sources. The results are presented in three blocks. Firstly, Uruguay is located in the regional context through seven macro indicators; In this regard, it can be concluded that, in general, the country performs well in those indicators that are not dependent on relative size. Secondly, 19,679 publications were identified for the 40-year period considered; 60% of the production is concentrated in the last decade, and in the penultimate decade the most cited production. At a global level, Uruguay collaborates more frequently with the region and with Europe, rather than with the US, contrary to what is reported in the literature on Latin American countries. Finally, the thematic specialty of the country’s scientific production was identified: biological sciences and agricultural sciences, which positions Uruguay between the western and bio-environmental models.
  • The Indigenous Pictorial Codices held in the National Library of Mexico

Rosas Xelhuantzi, Tesiu (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-06-06)
This work studies five manuscripts from the colonial period that are preserved in the National Library of Mexico. Firstly, it explores the concept of codex and its application in the Mesoamerican context, with the interest of locating the proposed documentary grouping criteria based on the remanence of indigenous record systems. Then comes the presentation of each of the copies that constitute the corpus, which includes a brief historical context as well as a select example of some of its graphic characteristics. Finally, the spatio-temporal location of the copies in the history of Mexican written culture is shown, and it concludes with some thoughts on the corpus addressed and the indigenous scriptural and iconographic manifestations in the colonial period. In this way, the purpose of the article is focused on presenting and describing five manuscripts as members of the corpus of Nahua codices held in the National Library of Mexico.
  • Reading habits of students from Ecuadorian universities

Suárez Monzón, Noemí; Gutiérrez Gallego, José Antonio; Soto Vázquez, José; Jaraíz Cabanillas, Francisco Javier; Sevilla Vallejo, Santiago; Pérez Parejo, Ramón (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-06-06)
This work examines the reading habit of 7.094 Ecuadorian university students through an online survey. They are analyzed according to gender, the three geographic areas of Ecuador, the undergraduate/postgraduate distinction, and the areas of knowledge. Differences are compared in hours spent per week, number of books read, frequency of library attendance, types of reading done there, number of books purchased/downloaded, and percentage spent reading in free time compared to other activities in the mentioned categories. The students of Arts and Humanities and those of Health Sciences are the ones with the best reading habit. However, the reading habit of the sample as a whole is low, which is why the preparation of professors is necessary to face this problem.
  • Exploring the “school archive” concept

Frasson Martendal, Fernanda (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-06-06)
Historically, the terms “school archive” refer to archives that are derived from an educational entity at middle or high school. However, the scientific literature gives us other examples, in which “school archives” are presented as a broad concept, which can also identify, in certain cases, archives from universities. In this sense, the term is limited for some uses, since educational laws often present levels of education that differ or extend the three mentioned, in different jurisdictions. This article, therefore, seeks to characterize and analyze the concept of “school archive”, considering its multiple epistemological perspectives. Methodologically, it uses Rodgers’ (2000) strategy of concept analysis, which allows the identification of common attributes, history, and consequences of the use of this concept. It has been considered, from the analysis carried out, that the term adheres to certain educational contexts, but from a more limited spectrum, it fails to represent the specificities required for each educational level.
  • The role of libraries in the socio-educational reintegration of adolescents deprived from freedom: Analysis of five libraries of Latin American juvenile detention centers

Flores-Fernández, Cherie; Civilo-Becerra, Maureen; Avilés Cañón, Pamela; Fernández Schutz, Rodrigo (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-06-05)
This research analyzes the role of libraries in the socio-educational reintegration of adolescents deprived from freedom in four Latin American countries: Chile, Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico. The qualitative methodological approach is used, and semi-structured interviews are applied to the representatives of the selected institutions. Through a content analysis, the role and position of libraries in organizations that work with adolescents deprived from freedom are studied. In addition, the importance of interdisciplinary work is studied and specific roles and functions of libraries for the insertion and social empowerment of young people are disclosed. The promotion of basic social rights is evident in the proposal of activities and services and a difference in the experience that supports each information unit.

  • Construction of global citizenship through rural libraries. A systematization of two experiences in Colombia

Aguilar-Forero, Nicolás; Salazar, Fernando; Aguilar Forero, Paloma (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-06-05)
Although the relationship between libraries and citizenship has been widely studied, there is a gap in the production of knowledge around the link between libraries and global citizenship. The present work contributes to bridge that gap by presenting the results of an investigation that sought to understand how two rural libraries in Colombia, through their reading, writing and orality practices, contribute to the construction of global citizenship. The study was based on a research approach that favors dialogue and the collective construction of knowledge. The results allowed to identify that both libraries build global citizenship by promoting its three fundamental pillars: respect for diversity, solidarity, and a shared sense of humanity.
  • Written Culture in an Art Museum. Objects and practices of the written word in Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes Rosa Galisteo de Rodríguez in the mid-twentieth century

Pedroni, Juan Cruz (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2023-06-02)
This article examines the social uses of writing in a provincial museum of fine arts on the Argentinean area known as Litoral in the mid-twentieth century, based on different contributions from historical studies on written culture. The interrelated study of bibliographic objects, ephemera, exhibited writings, apparatus and autographs allows us to identify and constitute different writing practices and artefacts as an object of analysis. From the study of a particular case, the article characterizes different typologies of writing and analyses their appropriation by a social group. These uses are contextualized in the light of the emergence of differential forms of valuing writing in the graphic media and in the institutional culture of the museum in the mid-twentieth century. The particularities of an art museum allow us to observe from a singular perspective the insistence of imaginaries that link written inscription with the expression of individuality and the preservation of illustrious names in the collective memory. The study also highlights the notion of written heritage, understood as a conceptual device that makes it possible to give a unitary and integral account of the written objects preserved in a museum.
