Abstract
The work of the historian Claudia Töngi focuses on different forms of violence such as killing crimes and domestic and sexual violence. Based on a broad collection of data and primary documents from the court archive of the Swiss canton of Uri (which is provided in the appendix), she illustrates how women and men viewed the use of violence in the 19th century and how practices of violence and their perceptions were transformed in the time-period considered. On the one hand, Claudia Töngi brings the still unpublished archival documents against the backdrop of social-historical questions to light. On the other hand, she allows interested researchers who work comparatively on violence and delinquency quick access to data. The study was carried out as project number 15 within the framework of the National Fonds Program “Violence in Everyday Life and Organized Criminality" (NFP 40; http://www.nfp40.ch, 20.04.2004).
