In the present essay of 1936, Julius Schlosser seems to have originated the term of ‘die Wiener Schule de Kunstgeschichte’. After surviving a period of exasperating rivalry with Josef Strzygowski, seeing so many colleagues go to their graves before completing their favorite projects, and possibly since Wilhelm Waetzoldt decided to omit Austrians from his Deutsche Kunsthistoriker, there were several reasons for a man of his age, experience and critical vigor to take stock of a development which seemed to be heading into an uncertain future.Date
