Abstract&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: &amp;quot;Times New Roman Standard&amp;quot;; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US"&gt;Youth must always be analysed with respect to two aspects: Firstly, as a &lt;em&gt;societally&lt;/em&gt; shaped phase of life that varies socially and culturally across countries and regions, characterized by different chances of social integration and dangers of disintegration. Secondly, as &lt;em&gt;individual&lt;/em&gt; biographies playing out in a specific societal dynamic of integration/disintegration, where experiences with violence as perpetrators or victims play an important role.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: &amp;quot;Times New Roman Standard&amp;quot;; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US"&gt;Life in particular societal constellations presents risks for certain parts of the young generation, just as the behavior of youth may itself pose risks in some societal situations. The way the general relationship varies across different national and cultural contexts is the question we have chosen to home in on in this issue of the journal. Post-war, post-dictatorial, developing, transformative, and precarious societal contexts form consistent points of reference for the contributions, which include both country-specific case studies and comparative investigations.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

PALS - Performance Assessment Links in Science1999-01PALS is an on-line, standards-based, continually updated resource bank of science performance assessment tasks indexed via the National Science Education Standards (NSES) and various other standards frameworks. The tasks, collected from numerous sources, include student directions and response forms, administration procedures, scoring rubrics, examples of student work, and technical quality data calculated from field testing. On-line rater training packets have also been created for some tasks. PALS is supported by a grant from the Elementary, Secondary, and Informal Education (ESIE) Division (Grant #: ESI-9730651) of the National Science Foundation. NASA Earth Observatory: Biomes (title provided or enhanced by cataloger)This National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) website allows students to investigate biomes and then test their knowledge by completing missions. The site provides basic data about each biome such as temperature, precipitation, vegetation, location, description and links. Biomes discussed include coniferous forest, temperate deciduous forest, desert, grassland, rainforest, shrubland and tundra. The two missions (available at beginner and advanced levels) are designed to teach students about the relationship between temperature and precipitation and plants in biomes. A teacher resource guide provides details about goals, expected outcomes, extension ideas, and hands-on activities.
