Abstract

The article The Circle of Punishment: Lynching as the Scene of Criminal Accusation and Denunciation focuses on the analysis of the social construction of lynching and on the perception of such events as a “scene”, possessing its own visuality and dramatics. The analyses were based on the examination of 42 Brazilian videos collected from YouTube. Observing these recordings is useful to verify how the concepts of “accusation”, “denunciation” and “punishment” are engaged in practice by a group of actors who, albeit unintentionally, put them into practice throughout the entire lynching. In such cases, one can perceive the punishability without limits that reifies a single moral (that of the group which is participating in the lynching), making the accusation plausible and tolerated for that group.

Keywords: lynching, acusation, punishment, YouTube, scene
