浄影寺慧遠『大乗起信論義疏』 の成立問題 [The Dating of Jingyingsi Huiyuan’s Commentary on The Awakening of Faith Sutra]

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to consider the problems of the dating of Jingyingsi Huiyuan’s (浄影寺慧遠) Dacheng qixinlun yishu (Commentary on the Mahayana Awakening of Faith Sutra, 大乗起信論義疏). The attribution of Commentary on the Mahayana Awakening of Faith Sutra to the brush of Huiyuan has been problematic. Whereas Mochizuki Shinryou (望月信亨) claimed that it was not written by Huiyuan, Yoshizu Yoshihide (吉津宜英) considered that it was. However, they both recognized that the Commentary on the Mahayana Awakening of Faith Sutra was based on other works by Huiyuan. This paper considers the order of writing between Commentary on the Mahayana Awakening of Faith Sutra and Huiyuan’s other works. The following concepts are examined: “yana”(乗), “awakening of faith”(起信), “the stage of practice”(行位), “three-kinds of three observation” (三種三観), “ninth-vijnana”(第九識). These concepts appear in the other works of Huiyuan, but they are used quite differently in Commentary on the Awakening of Faith Sutra. The paper also argues on the basis of the use of “the stage of practice” (行位) that the Commentary on the Awakening of Faith Sutra was written after Shi Di Yi Ji(十地義記), “shidiyi”(十地義), and “bashiyi”(八識義). Because “pusajindi”(菩薩尽地) is equivalent to “dishidi”(第十地) only in Commentary on the Awakening of Faith Sutra. On the basis of examining the concept of “three-kinds of three observation” (三种三观), it is evident that the Commentary on the Awakening of Faith Sutra was written after Huiyuan’s “bashiyi”(八識義). Therefore, it can be confirmed that the Commentary on the Awakening of Faith Sutra was written after all the writings of Huiyuan’s were completed. Moreover, on the basis on considering the concepts of “yana” and “awakening of faith”, Commentary on the Awakening of Faith Sutra was most probably not written by Huiyuan.
