• 1 and 2 Corinthians

      G Kaniarakath (Dharmaram College, 1982-12-31)
From F. F. Bruce, the well-known N. T. Scholar, we have an invaluable commentary on the Corinthian epistles, which tell us about the problems of an infant Church in a pagan, commercial city whose idea of freedom led to a kind of libertinism in life. Sexual morality is an important theme of the first letter as also the dissipating party spirit rampant there. In the second letter Paul is concerned about the visitors from Jerusalem whose identity is still in dispute, who even questioned the apostolic authority of Paul. Paul offers a strong apology for himself (2 Cor. 11 :22: 12: 1).

    • A 'DYNAMIC EQUIVALENCE TRANSLATION' OF THE BHAGAVAD GITA

      Callewaert, W. M. (Dharmaram College, 1980-03-31)
Translators of the Cita (into non-Indian languages) and of the Bible (into Indian languages) are facing very similar problems. They write for a reader who belongs to a culture totally different from the source text, which is religious, ancient and literary. Like the Bible in the West, the Glia. is the most translated book of the Hindu heritage. In English alone, more than 150 different translators have published their translation of the Gird, often with commentary.
    • A Biblical Approach to Religious Life

      Thomas Podimattam (Dharmaram College, 1997-03-31)
In recent years several books dealing with various aspects of religious life have been published. But we have very few books which examine religious life entirely from a scriptural point of view. The book under review is a significant one in this direction. It examines almost every aspect of religious life in the light of the Bible. The Bible is the source of inspiration to religious life. Starting with vocation, the book disaiss practically every aspect of religious life. Vocation, a call from God or a choice by God, finds its explanation in God and in Him alone. The call of Abraham, and of the apostles, show how God out of his love chooses apparently unworthy individuals and makes them worthy instruments in His service. The same is true of the call of every religious person. The call to holiness is addressed to all, for there is only one holiness.
    • A BLUEPRINT FOR A NEW AND REVOLUTIONARY SPIRITUAL PATH

      Bilimoria, Purushottama (Dharmaram College, 1989-03-31)
The idea of a total and radical change, not only at the individual but also at the level of humanity at large, for the bettermentof our times, was taking shape in me for sometime. We all know how grave the modern day malaisé is and the dangers that loom over our heads threatening the peace of our times. A warning from Sri Aurobindo, the Indian sage-philosopher, given some thirty years ago, points a way out: "It is for the men of our days and, at the most, of tomorrow to give the answer. For, too long a postponement or too continued a failure will open the way to a series of increasing catastrophes which might create a too prolonged and disastrous confusion and chaos and render a solution too difficult or impossible; it might even end in something like an irremediable crash not only of the present world civilisation but of all civilisation. A new, a difficult and uncertain beginning might have to be made in the midst of the chaos and ruin after perhaps an extermination on a large scale, and a more successful creation could be predicted only if a way was found to develop a better humanity or perhaps a greater superhuman race." (The Ideal of Human Unity pp. 389-390).
    • A BUDDHIST CRITIQUE OF LIBERALISM’S APPEAL TO GLOBAL JUSTICE

      Miller, Leon (Dharmaram College, 2009-12-31)
The prominent business ethics scholar Manuel Velasquez describes business ethics as “The application of an understanding of what is good and right to transactions and pursuits that we call business. It begins with providing a framework of basic principles for understanding what is meant by the terms good and right.”1 The global financial crisis raises concerns about the principles guiding social systems in their attempt to produce and distribute the materials needed so that the members of the society enjoy an enriched quality of life. From the Buddhist perspective individual ingenuity is intended to increase personal and social benefits. For this reason the increase of prosperity is not only viewed as the concern of the private business individual, but also a concern shared by the entire social system. Thus there is necessarily a dimension to the study of business ethics that relates to concerns about social justice – as there must be guidelines to insure that business benefits (does not hurt) public interests.
