Abstract
Globalization trends present challenges for the dissemination of information for content producers around the world. Non-governmental, non-profit, and scholarly content producers are leveraging increasingly dynamic internet-based technological solutions to distribute content. Powerful “open source” software applications exist for solving many communication challenges without the associated licensing fees that are required by private or corporate owned software providers. An understanding of how “open source” software can be used will be critical for surviving in the global society while also accommodating local interests. Fortunately many unique “open source” software applications are free and can be adapted to fit the unique needs of content producers. This paper will explain a selection of open source software applications that contribute to the dissemination of information for the Common Good and suggest strategies for integrating such systems into existing communication plans.
