Abstract
"When Jesus questions the expectations of the Messiah in the Gospel of Mark, he implicitly raises the question of masculinity, intrinsic to that same messianic expectation. The following pages propose to reflect first on a personal experience as a male, and emphasize the slow, painful and liberating process that allows for a type of masculinity freed from society’s established norms of dominance. By reflecting from within society’s view of masculinity, what appears is an imaginary construction, both in the times when the gospels were written as well as in our current day. From these perspectives, and with a double objective in mind, there follows an analysis of Mark’s Gospel as a whole as well as a study of specific texts. The article offers a criticism of the institutional model of masculinity, without which one cannot understand the words and actions of Jesus as they appear in Mark’s gospel. It concludes by establishing guidelines for a more human and liberating masculinity."
