Abstract

"Las cartas pastorales (en este caso 1Timoteo) muestran los dilemas de la tercera generación cristiana. Las comunidades tienen que resolver problemas de convivencia interna y externa, en medio de su creciente institucionalización. Entre ellos aparece la cuestión de los esclavos. No se trata de la institución “esclavitud” como institución socio-económica, sino la situación concreta de los esclavos y esclavas que convivían con las familias y trabajaban para y con ellas. Problemas de poder, interpretación del mensaje y construcción ético comunitaria están en juego, y la salida parece ser una vía intermedia." "The Pastoral Epistles (and 1Tm in this case) show the dilemmas which the third Christian generation faced. The communities had to solve the problems of internal and external relationships, amidst its increasing institutionalization. Among those problems appears the issue of the slaves. It is not “slavery” as an economic and social institution, but the concrete situation of the coexistence of slaves in the family and community circle, slaves that live and work together with the families. Problems of power, interpretation of the Christian message and the construction of community ethics are at stake, and the way out seems to be a certain middle of the line attitude."
