Abstract
This article begins with an analysis of the contrast between /desire in Song of Songs and the disinterested love of Paul. It acknowledges the enormous interest which the book of Songs has always evoked and how this interest was fostered in the monasteries. It explores the relationship between eroticism, asceticism and mysticism, with the latter being understood as the practice of the presence of God. Origen laid the foundations for an exegetical mysticism which viewed the Song of Songs as the most theological book of Scripture. After analyzing this line of interpretation the mystical tradition of monasticism is acknowledged and Bernard of Clairvaux is chosen as a model for study. By making a contrast between Bernard and his contemporary Peter Abelard, it ends by noting the absence of a Christian mysticism that begins with the carnal love between husband and wife"
