Abstract
This essay seeks to analyze the beginning of the heavenly journey and the visions of Revelation 4 and 5. Our point of departure will be the ecstatic visionary experience of John. We will attempt to demonstrate through Jewish literary parallels of the period that such visions regarding the hierarchies and structures of the heavenly world were an important part of both Jewish and Christian religiosity of the first century CE. The same is true for the heavenly worship as counterpart of the earthly worship of the Jewish and Christian communities. Finally, we make some observations about the language that predominates in these visions"
