Abstract
An analysis of the placement of the eschatological discourse within the Gospel of Matthew reveals the importance given to it. A study of the contents of the discourse reveals that Matthew has altered the discourse, partly by introducing materials from Q but mostly by expansion out of exclusive Matthean materials. These alterations have the effect of making the wait for the Parousia an active one and giving to the Return of the Lord the specific content of a Judgment on the acts of justice and mercy performed on behalf of the most needy persons"
