Abstract
A study is made of the use which is made of ¡he word g’l by three pre-exilic prophets, Hosea uses it in ¡he context of rebellious Israel, like a headstrong fetus which the mother finally aborts for seeking in internal and external power ¡he liberation which comes only from God. Micah prefers to contront confidence in riches, when these are rather an idol which sucks the blood of the poor and thus is an absolute opposite to the God of life, as Jesus and the New Testament show more clearly. Jeremiah, on ¡he other hand, uses this root two times to refer to minor liberating acts which can awake and sustain ¡he hope of ¡he people in the midst of a truly desperate situation. These lines of prophecy make their mark in our Latin American situation which seeks an integral liberation of the people; following in the foot steps of those early witnesses who, like Father de las Casas, soughtout “the oppressed Indians” in order to liberate them; learning from them to avoid false paths and empowering all liberating acts, however modest they might be, in our present sorrow-filled and hope-filled historical situations"
