La Democracia Cristiana en Colombia (1959-1960): observaciones preliminares

Abstract

In Colombia, the attempt to create a Christian Democratic party occurred at the end of the 1950s. At this moment, various groups, worried about the violence that ravaged the country and the scandalous social conditions in which many Colombians lived, directed their criticisms toward the Conservative and Liberal parties. These same concerns were present in the Catholic side and motivated a series of initiatives seeking to offer a "Christian" solution to serious problems of this kind. Among the variety of strategies to which these efforts gave rise, Christian Democracy was one of the options to emerge from the bosom of Catholicism. This article examines the origins of Christian Democracy and the varied strategies its leaders adopted to organize their movement and achieve the outlined objectives.

En Colombia, los intentos por crear un partido demócrata cristiano se dieron a finales de los años cincuenta, en momentos en que algunos sectores, preocupados por el clima de violencia que desgarraba al país y por la escandalosa situación social en que vivían muchos colombianos, dirigieron sus críticas a los partidos conservador y liberal. Estas mismas preocupaciones estuvieron presentes en el campo católico y motivaron una serie de iniciativas que buscaron darle una solución "cristiana" a tan graves problemas, recurriendo a estrategias de diversa índole. La Democracia Cristiana fue una de las opciones que se manifestaron en el seno del catolicismo. El texto estudia el origen de la DC y las diversas estrategias que adoptaron sus líderes para organizar su movimiento y para alcanzar los objetivos trazados.
