Abstract
["This article offers an interpretation of a paradoxical situation in the religious field of Lima, which can be also found in the rest of Latin America: the success of a “religion of the book” in a milieu where oral culture prevails. For the Evangelicals following the Protestant Sola Scriptura tradition, the Bible plays a central role. Thanks to a fundamentalist reading which divides the text in sequences easily used to answer daily problems, they render the text understandable by semi-illiterate people. In this way, God, Emanuel, is always at the believer’s side and takes part in his life. Although the reading of the Bible remains superficial and several structures of popular Catholicism endure, the access to the Bible represents an opportunity of social promotion and recognition".]
