"Nasci em Arealva, pequena cidade do interior de São Paulo, na região de Bauru, em 1922. Dos cinco filhos que meus pais tiveram, só eu sobrevivi. Minha mãe morreu quando eu não tinha ainda dois anos. Meu pai casou-se de novo e morei com ele em diversos lugares da zona rural próxima a Pirajuí. Até os meus dez anos ajudei meu pai nas diversas atividades da roça. Fui trazido para São Paulo por minha avó materna para iniciar meus estudos, pois que ela, convertida ao presbiterianismo, me dedicara ao ministério após a morte de minha mãe.
