Abstract
"In its beginnings, the task of evangelization in New Spain had to face two fundamental problems: how to establish communication with the natives and a lack of knowledge about the Pre-Hispanic religions. Both problems led the 16th Century missionaries to undertake a comprehensive study of the languages and customs of the natives, a study later reflected in several works. Thus, the linguistic and ethnographic training of the missionaries involved a complete recovery of the indigenous cultural tradition that, as we will see, facilitated the recovery of the huehuetlatolli and its use as essential tool in the evangelization of New Spain."
