Reconstruction of the died-out traditional music was one of the conceptual ideas behind Lithuanian folkloristic movement of 1970s and 1980s. Lithuanian polyphonic songs (sutartinės) as well as other ancient genres of Lithuanian folklore were reconstructed by members of the folk groups. Some pieces by Lithuanian professional composers were also based on the same concept. Most interesting examples of historical reconstruction (fiction) are scenic oratorios by Bronius Kutavičius. Oratorio "From the Jatvingian Stone" (1983) is written for vocal ensemble, Lithuanian folk instruments (whistles, flutes, wooden horns, bow, zither, violin, harmonica), and a set of stones. In the first part Kutavičius tries to reconstruct the music that could have been performed during ritual ceremonies of Jatvingians - a Baltic tribe who died out in the 14th century. In the second part he demonstrates how ritual sounds became a song. The song used is an ancient Lithuanian folk song originating from the same region where the Jatvingians lived. Oratorio "The Magic Sanskrit Circle" (1990) is also like a bridge from folk to artistic music. Its structures are circular, mostly canons performed by voices and various folk instruments. Historical fictions of the 1970s and 1980s are heterochronical - making slices in time. They could be regarded not only as nostalgic images of the past, but also as musical actions of resistance and cultural revival. In Soviet times, historical reconstructions were interpreted by listeners as messages of Lithuanian freedom, but after the declaration of independence - as models of contemporary Lithuanian history
