Abstract
"La frontera del Chaco constituyó durante toda la época colonial un serio problema para la seguridad y permanencia de las ciudades erigidas en la región. Los ataques sufridos por Asunción y Concepción del Bermejo entre 1590 y 1613 dieron lugar a que las autoridades de las mismas reclamaran medidas defensivas y ofensivas aéordes a la importancia de dichas amenazas. Una Real cédula dictada el 16.IV.1618 autorizó la guerra contra los guaycurúes y payaguáes, por entender que se trataba de acciones de legítima defensa, conforme a los argumentos expuestos en un dictamen jurídico y teológico elaborado en Asunción en 1613" ["Chaco border established throughout the colonial era a serious problem for the safety and permanence of cities erected in the region.
