Abstract
In this article I consider several types of syncretism and anti-syncretism practised by Japanese religions in Brazil focusing in particular on Soka Gakkai which is known in Brazil as Soka Gakkai International do Brasil or simply BSGI, and to a lesser extent on Sekai Kyusei Kyo (Church of World Messianity and in Brazil Igreja Messiânica Mundial do Brasil or Messiânica (Messianity) and Seicho No Ie (House of Growth). I will attempt to show how Soka Gakkai moved from an exclusive, oppositional approach to other forms of Buddhism and other religions to a more experimental one. I will then sketch the rise of Messianity as an “ultra religion” and finally, and very briefly examine Seicho No Ie’s strategy of constructive ambiguity which like Messianity’s position as an ultra religion allows it to open itself up to people of all religious persuasions and none"]
