Abstract
["The article is based on an ethnographic study of the popular devotion to Jararaca, a cangaceiro in Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte, murdered by the police in 1927 . My aim is to show the rites that reveal and support such devotion by enphasizing its verbal aspects: testimonies, hagiographic narrations and historical facts - mainly the facts about the cangaceiro’s death and his life as a cangaceiro. Through these ritual speeches his social identity is recreated in conformity to a romantic Robin Hood model while his death become an exemplar of Christian martyrdom. So he turns into a funerary saint".]
