Abstract
["The Shaolin Monastery is probably one of the most famous Buddhist temples in the world. The reason is not linked to doctrinal contributions of its resident monks, nor the traditions that associate the monastery to the figure of Bodhidharma (Ta Mo), the legendary founder of the Chan school. Shaolin's fame rests on the martial arts: many Chinese martial traditions consider the monastery as his birthplace. The twentieth century witnessed a fascinating cultural transformation, with Chinese martial techniques gaining increasing popularity in the West. Featuring a unique blend of military, religious and therapeutic purposes, such Shaolin martial arts became known to many people not always familiar with the Buddhist faith".]
