"Sumário: O período moderno de missões protestantes acontece paralelamente à expansão capitalista da segunda metade do século XIX. Esse período traz para o Brasil não só outras formas de Cristianismo, como também as promessas do Iluminismo presentes na ideologia protestante da época. Esse trabalho examina a experiência de dois grupos norte-americanos (a missão presbiteriana e a missão batista) no Brasil do século XIX, buscando entender as condições históricas nas quais as duas missões se inserem no país e o nível de aceitação da ideologia trazidas por ambas. Nosso trabalho enfatiza a importância do momento histórico e do modelo eclesiástico transplantado pelas duas missões numa avaliação do grau de sucesso atingido por cada grupo em meio à população brasileira". ["Summary: The modern period of Protestant missions happens in parallel to capitalist expansion in the second half of the nineteenth century. This period brings to Brazil not only other forms of Christianity, as well as the promises of the Enlightenment in the present Protestant ideology of the time. This paper examines the experience of two American groups (the Presbyterian Mission and the Baptist mission) in nineteenth-century Brazil, seeking to understand the historical conditions in which the two missions within the country and the level of acceptance of the ideology brought by both. Our work emphasizes the importance of the historical moment and the ecclesiastical model transplanted by the two missions on an assessment of the degree of success achieved by each group among the Brazilian population".]
