La New Christian Right: un intento de restaurar la “América cristiana”

Abstract

La tolerancia general y la separación Iglesia-Estado establecida en la Primera Enmienda de la Constitución de Estados Unidos (por la que no se reconoce oficialidad de ninguna confesión y se permite su libre ejercicio) no dieron lugar a una indiferencia hacia la religión, pues esta seguiría impregnando la vida política y social norteamericana. Durante los siglos XIX y XX se han producido cuatro despertares religiosos, y distintas congregaciones se han erigido en plataformas impulsoras tanto de la reforma social – el caso del Social Gospel – como de una reacción conservadora, como la New Christian Right de finales de la década de 1970. En este artículo me propongo analizar el surgimiento de esta última y su impacto en la sociedad y política estadounidense. Además, señalaré algunas conexiones de este movimiento con otras corrientes políticas e intelectuales de la misma época (neoconservadurismo y Nueva Derecha) y con el fundamentalismo religioso en general.

The general tolerance and the separation of church and state established by the First Amendment to the US Constitution (rejecting to recognize any religion as official, while permitting the practice of all of them) didn’t cause indifference towards religion, which kept on impregnating political and social life in North America. During the 19th and 20th Century four religious awakenings came up, several religious organisations turning themselves into platforms promoting social reform, on one hand, which is the case of Social Gospel, or opposing a conservative reaction, on the other, as done by the New Christian Right at the end of the nineteen seventies. In this article I intend to analyse the emergence of the New Christian Right and its influence on the United States society and politics. Besides, I will point out some connections of this religious political movement with other political and intellectual trends of the same period (neoconservatism and New Right) and with religious fundamentalism in general
