Abstract
The author explains a fundamental error that may lie at the base of the U.S. Supreme Court’s approval, in the year 2000, of abortion during the birth process. This error consists in conceiving physical human life to be a mere thing, something that can exist without a human being to live it. With regard to abortion, the error is rooted in a confusion of development with construction (of the fetus), a confusion owing in part to certain medieval beliefs now shown to be erroneous by modern science. In the second half of the article, the author argues that a similar error may easily give rise to a mistaken support for euthanasia: the error of conceiving human being to survive the destruction of physical life. The article explores this and other ways in which a mistaken conceptual separation of being and life may take place and clarifi es the dangers in omissions discourse. Finally, the article counsels resistance to the ethical and legal pressures for death that arise from these errors"]
