Abstract
This article showsthat Maimônides pioneered an approach to Jewish ethics in which the cultivation of virtues represents a religious imperative based upon the obligation to imitate the ways of God. Whereas for Aristotle cultivation ofvirtues was dictated by eudaimonistic considerations, for Maimônides it was mandated by the religious duty of imitatio Dei. The centrality assigned to virtue accounts for numerous other specific features whichdistinguish Maimonides's approach from that of many other Jewish philosophers. Amongthem are the emphasis that the ideal of totally selfless service to God iscompromised when the service is motivaled by the expectation of reward in the hereafter; his insistence that in the moral realm good deeds inspired byinclination are superior to those which0 are performed after a struggle againstnatural inclination; and his view son supererogation. It aiso refutes the positionof those who claim that Maimônides restricls the obligation of imitating the divine moral attributes to those involved in political activity"]
