Abstract
This introduction to the dossier “Looking at nature : Greek and Roman gaze” explains the epistemological and historiographical background in which it has been conceived. It places the survey in the context of the visual studies, from an anthropological point of view, applied to Greek and Roman representation of nature, through images and texts. Instead of using the strongly connoted concept of “landscape”, is questioned the way the Ancient used to look at nature, which selections they made, how they imagined systems in visu and in situ, how they conceived the relationships between human beings and nature, and their evolution through space and time. A selective bibliography on these topics is given at the end.
