Abstract
"No es nada fácil para mí estar hoy aquí frente a ustedes y desempeñar el papel de akpuon, akorín, es decir, de narrador, de djeli, sobre todo cuando el tema del que estamos tratando es tan trascendente. Es una herida abierta en nuestra isla desde principios del siglo XVI, cuando los primeros españoles entraron en contacto con la población aborigen y la sometieron al sistema de encomienda, la aniquilaron con sus maltratos, la obligaron a lavar las arenas auríferas en los ríos o a cavar en busca de otros metales preciosos. A partir del momento en que se inició en nuestra isla lo que un periodista chileno describió en un libro que les recomiendo a todos, que se llama La conquista erótica de las Indias, y que se publicó en España durante las conmemoraciones del Quinto Centenario, es decir, a partir del momento en que esos primeros españoles llegaron a Cuba y se apropiaron de la vida de los hombres y las mujeres –avasallaron a esas mujeres, les hicieron hijos, los primeros mestizos, que luego murieron a causa de las epidemias traídas de Europa– se inició el maltrato, la conquista a fuerza de fuego, hierro, cruz sangrante y espada llameante" ["It's not easy for me to be here in front of you and play the role of akpuon, akorín, ie narrator of djeli, especially when the topic we are discussing is so transcendent.
