Abstract

"He acudido esta noche a este magnífico templo de oración porque mi conciencia no me deja otra alternativa. Me uno a todos ustedes porque estoy completamente de acuerdo con los objetivos y tareas que están desarrollando los organizadores de este encuentro, la asociación Clergy and Laymen Concerned About Vietnam (Clérigos y laicos preocupados por la situación en Vietnam). La reciente declaración de su comité ejecutivo refleja los sentimientos de mi propio corazón, y por eso coincido plenamente con dicha declaración cuando afirma que “llega un momento en que el silencio equivale a traición”. Dicho momento ha llegado para nosotros en relación con Vietnam. La verdad de estas palabras está fuera de toda duda. Sin embargo, más complicada resulta la misión que hemos de desempeñar. Incluso cuando se encuentran bajo la presión de las demandas de la verdad interior, a los hombres no les resulta sencilla la tarea de oponerse a la política que están llevando a cabo sus propios gobiernos, especialmente en tiempo de guerra. Tampoco se expresa el espíritu humano, si no es con grandes esfuerzos, contra la apatía conformista del propio pensamiento y el mundo circundante. Además, cuando los asuntos más inmediatos se presentan tan confusos como en el caso de este espantoso conflicto, estamos al borde de dejarnos confundir por la incertidumbre. Pero debemos seguir avanzando.
