Abstract
It is necessary to assume the idea that no human being is totally healthy or totally sick as a process that requires a new way to think health and disease as a change in the conception of world and vulnerability, prioritizing alleviation. This paper aims to rescue the historical construction of the concept of palliative care and its implementation, to contextualize the necessary aspects of vocational training focused on this activity, particularly for the care of young patients in terminal stages. We proceeded to an opinionated review of the literature on palliative care, with an analytical purpose, within a thematic range, according to historical function and critical approach, by selecting 35 articles among 499 published from 1999 to 2010. Based on the historical development of palliative care, we discussed the requirements for training professionals in palliative care and the challenges for palliation of children and adolescents. The defense of life and the certainty of death as a normal process of living were highlighted, demonstrating why both should be the subject of care, with the difference that palliative care is a relatively new area and involve more global and extensive issues to be inserted into health professionals’ training"]
