Abstract
This paper aims to discuss the film “The elephant man” from a historical-social, esthetic and bioethical point of view. The basis is the history of the English citizen Joseph Merrick, who lived in the second half of the Nineteenth century, and was affected by a deforming syndrome, which made him face a terrible rejection and prejudice to the point of being explored in “aberrations shows”. I spite of his “monstrous” condition, Merrick was a docile, intelligent and sensible man. The history of this drama, which would serve to sensitize people and make to acquire knowledge about how bad are prejudices and judging people by their appearance, produced also, due to its worldwide exhibition in a powerful film, a traumatic phenomenon of “man-elephantization” for a great many people affected by the syndrome (diagnosed as a rare and extreme case of neurophibromatosis). Finally, by questioning the exploration of human deformations in “entertainment programs”, as well as the sensationalist and unscrupulous sale of human pain by the media in general, we identify, under a bioethical perspective, the pressing need of proposing decisive actions in favor of respecting human vulnerability"]
