Abstract
Since time immemorial, human beings have sought to improve the human condition by technologies which changed the world around us, but we did not attempt to change ourselves. But across a range of scientific disciplines, discoveries and developments now make the idea of significantly modifying the human body no longer mere science fiction. ‘Human enhancement’ is about trying to make changes to minds and bodies - characteristics, abilities, emotions and capacities - beyond what we regard today as normal. It raises deep theological and ethical issues about our humanity, our societies and our human destiny, which churches and societies need to debate, for which we offer this report.

Performance-enhancing drugs in sports and the role of doctor

Prakash, Kaveri (Forum for medical ethics society, 2013)
"There is little data in India on the use of performance enhancing drugs in sports. But personal and incidental information shows that their use is far more extensive than is believed. This use occurs beyond the arena of high-level competitive sports. Even if the guidelines of the national and world anti-doping agencies were to become effective, they would not impact the larger environment where such drug use appears to be extensive. Which ethical guidelines advise the sports medical practitioner in prescribing medicines and training regimes for the athlete? Of particular concern is the role of paediatricians since training for sports or physical fitness is increasingly a youth phenomenon. The following is a discussion note, prompted by personal and anecdotal experience"

A Brief Critique of Two Claims about the Social Value of Biotechnological Enhancements

Capps, Benjamin; Nielsen, Lisbeth W; Stirrat, Gordon M (Center for Biomedical Ethics (CBmE) National University of Singapore, 2012)
"Enhancement technologies are often described in such a way as to emphasise the welcome altered state they confer on users; this state differs in degree from what is an expected range for human capacity. A comprehensive list of enhancements may therefore include uncontroversial social arrangements, such as wide access to education, improved sanitary conditions or nutrition, or the implementation and use of a vast array of novel technologies, such as psychoactive substances, gene therapy, prosthetics and computer interfaces, which may (or may not) enhance specific physical, mental or cognitive traits of the individual user"
