Abstract
The present study aims to analyze the vision of Gilberto Freyre about african-Brazilian religion within his work The Masters and the Slaves, and to investigate the characteristics and dynamics of Brazilian and African religions contextualized in Brazilian society in its genesis, detecting issues on the construction of identity and processes of social legitimacy of these religions. The study aims, first, to understand how these religions were engendered in society, what is its heart and what is the power they exercised - whether through influences on other religions or within the general fields covering Brazilian society - and then achieve understanding about how African religions were established in Brazil. The research seeks to make it possible to make clear the idea of religiosity present in The Masters and the Slaves"]
