Abstract
The legal and political process of separation between the political and religious affairs, usually called laicisation, does not imply the religion’s obsolescence at all. Indeed, the political sphere begins to legitimize its own autonomy with a civic cult to the homeland, idea first proposed by Jean Jacques Rousseau in his Social Contract published in 1762. The concept of civil religion, as we intend to point out, also inspires, in 1835, Alexis de Tocqueville’s description of the emergent american democracy. In order to explain the North American civil religion’s specific religiousness and the theoretical aspects that support it, we’ll use and discuss the concept of negative political theology, which deals with the sacredness of the supposedly unbreakable bond of citizens to their homeland"]
