And Here We Are: Reassessing One’s Jewishness in Jonathan Safran Foer’s Here I Am

Abstract

[EN] Over the last few decades, concerns about the growing distance between American Jewish people and Israel have grown considerably in the Jewish community. Recently, a few American Jewish authors have shown growing interest in this topic. The present dissertation analyzes how Jonathan Safran Foer represents the relationship between American Jews and Israel in Here I Am (2016) and is divided into three parts. The first one presents a theoretical framework that introduces the history of Israel and the Jewish Diaspora, as well as their relationship. The second part of this dissertation analyses the way the Promised Land has been depicted in American Jewish literature since the establishment of Israel in 1948. Finally, the last past of this study focuses on Jonathan Safran Foer’s work Here I Am and how he portrayed Israel in the story. First, the different strategies used by the author to engage Israel in his fiction are discussed. Then, the analysis focuses on the American Jewish characters’ identity. They are depicted as feeling torn between different identities and struggle to define their Jewishness, especially because the Israeli Jewish characters have a different understanding of what being Jewish means. This study also gives particular attention to the way Foer examines the notions of home and homeland, and how the American Jewish characters perceive their allegiance to the State of Israel. The final section analyzes how the dystopian aspect of the novel is foregrounded, thereby highlighting the different warnings Foer seems to give, namely about the influence of the media, the possibility that Israel could be destroyed, and, more importantly the fact that the relationship between American Jews and Israel could further deteriorate if Israel acts inhumanely. [FR] Au cours des dernières décennies, une distance croissante entre la communauté juive américaine et israélienne a pu être constatée. Récemment, quelques auteurs américains juifs semblent de plus en plus s’intéresser à ce sujet. Ce mémoire a pour but d’analyser la façon dont Jonathan Safran Foer représente les relations entre la communauté américaine juive et Israël dans son roman Here I Am et s’articule en trois parties. La première d’entre elles présente le cadre théorique qui permet de comprendre l’histoire d’Israël et de la diaspora juive, ainsi que leurs rapports. La seconde partie de la recherche analyse la manière dont la Terre Promise a été décrite dans la littérature américaine juive depuis la création de l’État d’Israël en 1948. Enfin, la dernière partie de ce mémoire se concentre sur Here I Am de Jonathan Safran Foer et la représentation d’Israël dans ce roman. En premier lieu, l’analyse développe les différentes stratégies que l’auteur utilise pour introduire Israël dans son œuvre avant d’étudier l’identité de ses personnages américains juifs. Dans Here I Am, ces derniers sont représentés comme se sentant déchirés entre différentes identités et éprouvent des difficultés à définir leur identité juive, notamment parce que les personnages israéliens juifs interprètent différemment leur judaïté. Cette étude s’intéresse également à la façon dont Foer examine les notions de foyer et patrie, et comment les personnages américains juifs perçoivent leur loyauté à l’État d’Israël. La section finale analyse l’aspect dystopique du roman et le rôle qu’il joue dans la mise en évidence de différents avertissements que Foer semble donner, à savoir une mise en garde concernant l’influence des médias, la possibilité qu’Israël soit détruite et, surtout, la façon dont les relations entre les communautés juives américaines et israéliennes pourraient d’avantage se détériorer si Israël fait preuve d’inhumanité.
