Abstract
This study is seen by the author as an overall view of the thought of Ortega y Gasset. It goes over the major milestones in the life of the philosopher, without forgetting to situate him briefly in the history of Spain, since the philosophy of Ortega is an attempt to reply to the Spanish problematic, although his thought spills over national limits to become a world philosophy. Ortega, breaking with neo-Kantian idealism, attempts to organise his thought around the idea of life and of vital reason. The highly important rôle of the imagination and of art is studied in particular. The thought of Heidegger is also considered in contrast with that of the Spanish philosopher. The study concludes with some reflections on what it is today to work in philosophy.
