Abstract
The extraction of unconventional hydrocarbons (HCNC) is growing in a context of global multidimensional crisis. The fracking becomes viable due to its high profit-earning capacity. It would also provide more energy in order to sustain economic growth. But, far from solving the problems asso-ciated with the dependence on fossil fuels, the HCNC extraction could aggravate them. This study focuses on the potential of HCNC extraction in the province of Neuquén, Argentina, as a mean to reach national energy self-sufficiency. To fulfill this objective: i) the context of the exploitation of hydrocarbons at the provincial and national level is analyzed, ii) the main biophysical flows associ-ated with hydraulic fracturing in Vaca Muerta are studied (focusing on the water-energy nexus) and, iii) a preliminary estimate of energy return in relation to the requirements for sufficiency at national level is proposed. This work is part of an ongoing investigation, which has made significant progress in addressing the issue of fracking from the perspective of ecological economics"]
