"O Príncipe é um texto político fundador da modernidade. Sua divulgação foi tão polêmica que é bastante difícil ter uma noção exata acerca das próprias ideias de Maquiavel com relação aos propósitos de sua obra. Criado a partir das repercussões ao texto do pensador florentino, o conceito de maquiavelismo identifica o pensamento político moderno de tal forma que o surgimento dos termos soberania e Estados e associaram a ele quase como sinônimos. Analisarei algumas das principais reações imediatas a O Príncipe para mostrar a gênese do maquiavelismo no cenário dos conflitos interpretativos em disputa na ebulição do Estado moderno.
