Simbolismo y uso litúrgico de algunas variedades de octli entre los antiguos nahuas [Symbolism and Liturgical Use of some Varieties of Octli among Ancient Nahuas]

Abstract

"En este artículo se establece un primer acercamiento al estudio del consumo de algunas variedades de octli - bebida embriagadora realizada con el jugo fermentado de los agaves - en la liturgia festiva de los antiguos nahuas de la época posclásica en el Centro de México. El trabajo está focalizado en el análisis de una fiesta específica, la de Panquetzaliztli, “Erección de banderas”, en la que se celebraba al dios patrono de los mexicas, Huitzilopochtli. En esta recurrencia religiosa se consumía un tipo específico de octli, llamado matlaloctli, “octli azul” y macuiloctli, “octli quíntuplo”. Ahora bien, en esta investigación se intentará descifrar el simbolismo de esta bebida fermentada relacionándola con la personalidad divina celebrada en este contexto ritual" ["This paper presents a first approach to the study of consumption of some varieties of octli - an intoxicating beverage made with the fermented juice of agaves - used in the festive liturgy in the ancient Nahua of the post-classical period in Central Mexico. The work is focused on the analysis of a specific feast, that of Panquetzaliztli, "Erection of flags", which was held in the patron god of the Aztecs, Huitzilopochtli.
