Abstract
The Seventh-day Adventist Church believes as a doctrine that death is an unconscious state, and that the final reward will come only at the final eschatological consummation. However, at a first look, the history of the rich and Lazarus (Lk 16:19-31) seems to contradict the Adventist belief, by pointing to a conscious state after death. Such understanding of the passage leads to the belief that the righteous dead enjoy afterlife at “the bosom of Abraham”, while the impious men endure the eternal punishment. The question could be raised: Was Jesus teaching about a state of consciousness after death? Was He affirming that the judgment of every human being occurs right after one’s death? After leaving this world, the deceased would go either to a place of blessing and joy or to a place of unspeakable torment? Because of these questions, it is necessary an in-depth study in order to search if there is a contradiction between the Bible and the Adventist teaching"]
