Abstract

Scotland is one of the four nations in the UK. The country has 5 million inhabitants and has long been legal and administrative executive responsibility for their own education system. In Scotland, the elementary school begins in mid-August for children aged four years and six months to five years and five months. A number of developments in recent years have led to the adoption of curricular framework for children from three to five years (Scottish Consultative Council on the Curriculum / SCCC, 1999). The primary schools are based on the "5-14 national guidelines for curriculum and assessment in Scotland" (Scottish Office Education Department, 1990). Children up to the age of 5 years and 5 months in a daycare to be, but also from the age of 4 years and 5 months to attend primary school. In international comparison, the age for formal schooling is much lower than in most countries: for this reason it is important that in the next chapter both curricula are discussed with regard to their relation to each other.
