Abstract
This article studies the person of Pontius Pilate as the governor of Judaea between 26 and 36. It takes account of the information given by Flavius Josephus, Philo of Alexandria, Tacitus and the New Testament, as well as that provided by archaeology and numismatics. It inclines towards seeing the episode of the standard as told by Josephus, and that of the gold shields related by Philo as one and the same. It sees in what Josephus says in Jewish Antiquities the pattern of Pilate’s prefectorship in Judaea, an account that is marked by the episode of the standards (at the beginning), by the piping of the water in Jerusalem (towards the middle), followed by the sentencing of Jesus of Nazareth; and the repression of the Samaritans which is said to have led to their destruction"]
