Abstract
Based upon the Rhetoric of Aristotle, this work intends to highlight the role of the so-called “technical proofs” or “proofs of the art” (ἔντεχνοι πίστεις), êthos, páthos and lógos in the Confessions of Augustine of Hippo, which, far beyond the simple tasks of character building, passions manipulation or speech ornamentation for exclusively persuasive and agonistic purposes, play a fundamental role in the thought of the African philosopher. To this end, it first undertakes a propaedeutic synthesis of the Aristotelian rhetorical system, followed by theoretical remarks on the three rhetorical genres in the Confessions, forensic, deliberative and epideictic, in order to deal, at last, with the roles of the proofs themselves"]
